The New Force, ECOWAS Court Rules in Favor of Shalimar Abbiusi Against Ghana

The ECOWAS Court has delivered a ruling in favor of Shalimar Abbiusi, spokesperson for the New Force, in her case against the Republic of Ghana. The court found that Ghana violated her fundamental rights through wrongful arrest, rearrest, and illegal deportation in December 2023, which caused significant harm to her personal and professional reputation.
The court stated that the Ghana Immigration Service’s actions contravened Article 6 on the Liberty of People, especially as the state prosecutor had dropped all charges against Ms. Abbiusi. This decision underscores Ghanaโs failure to uphold justice, prompting the court to mandate compensation for Ms. Abbiusi from the Ghanaian government.
Francis-Xavier Sosu, Esq., Member of Parliament for Madina, who represented Ms. Abbiusi alongside Lawyer Belinda Narkey Quaynor, welcomed the ruling. We feel vindicated that the ECOWAS Court has upheld the rights of Shalimar, Mr. Sosu stated.
The New Force expressed gratitude for the decision and reaffirmed its commitment to promoting justice and fairness across Africa. It urged the Ghanaian government to respect human rights and adhere to constitutional principles.
The actions against Ms. Abbiusi highlight a concerning pattern of political persecution that undermines democracy in Ghana, the New Force said in a statement.
The group called on civil society organizations, human rights defenders, and the international community to condemn such violations and advocate for reforms to strengthen governmental institutions and protect human rights.
