Morocco’s AFCON 2023 win had positive implications for hosts Ivory Coast, allowing them to qualify as one of the top four teams despite losing. However, for several coaches, the tournament has been challenging, leading to dismissals or resignations. Here are the five coaches affected so far:

  1. Chris Hughton:
The Irish coach faced dismissal from the Ghana Football Association on Tuesday night following the official confirmation of the Black Stars’ elimination. Hughton, who guided Ghana to the tournament in Ivory Coast, only managed to accumulate two points out of a possible nine.
  2. Jean-Louis Gasset:
Despite Ivory Coast securing a spot in the next round, head coach Jean-Louis Gasset was relieved of his duties. The Frenchman led the Elephants to just one win in the group stage, with back-to-back defeats against Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea, resulting in a third-place finish.
  3. Tom Saintfiet:
After Gambia failed to qualify from their group, Tom Saintfiet announced his resignation as head coach during the press conference following the game against Cameroon. The Scorpions lost all their group games and failed to secure a single point this year, contrasting with their progress two years ago.
  4. Djamel Belmadi:
After five years in charge, Djamel Belmadi resigned as the head coach of the Algerian national team. This decision came after Algeria’s elimination from the group stage for the second consecutive time, despite winning the trophy in 2019. An agreement was reached with the Algerian FA for Belmadi to step down.
  5. Jalel Kadri:
With Tunisia also unable to progress past the group stage, Jalel Kadri resigned as the head coach of the Cartilage Eagles on Wednesday. The North African side finished at the bottom of their group, securing only two points from three games played.
